Antique trunks were yesterday's suitcases. Personal belongings were kept safe and secure by a variety of locking mechanisms. Frequently these locks were covered with a single ply piece of leather, or lock cover, to protect them during travel.
Vintage steamer trunks often did not include a handle with which to raise the case's lid. Leather lid lifts were often attached to the bottom front of the lid.
The trunk lock covers and lid lifts are frequently attached to the lid of the trunk using a trunk nail or tackl. The Tack is driven through the leather into the body with the trunk. The portion of the nail protruding inside the trunk is then hammered over back into the wooden trunk body.
